The "Fried Hairdryer" Problem

One of the most expensive mistakes travelers make is assuming their electronics will work everywhere. While most modern laptops and phone chargers are "dual voltage" (meaning they can handle 110V to 240V), high-powered appliances like hairdryers, straighteners, and electric shavers often are not. If you plug a 110V device (US) into a 220V outlet (Europe) without a converter, the device will likely overheat, smoke, or be destroyed instantly. For phones and laptop chargers, look for "Input: 100-240V" on the brick. If you see that, you only need a shape adapter, not a voltage converter.

Adapter vs. Converter

An Adapter simply changes the shape of the prong so it fits into the wall. It does not change the electricity coming out of the socket.

A Converter (or Transformer) steps the voltage down (from 220V to 110V) or up. You usually need this for single-voltage heating appliances.
